Being Selfish?
Sorry for such a late post. Had an issue with the laptop tonight. 🙁 Many thanks for the compliments on my Holiday Meme. After last night’s outting with my former team from Fleet Bank, I decided to knock out some gift items, and I just finished one of them tonight. It is supposed to match the socks I showed you all in my last post. For now, I have photos from last night.
I actually started this morning with a shot of the backyard trees. You definitely know it is winter because the neighbors’ houses can be spotted through our miniature woods. (Please click the left-hand photo to see what I am talking about.) I also was able to photograph the project I really wanted to finish today. Notice the measurement of the hat by clicking on the right-hand photo.
If you can figure out my lack of hands, I shrank the measurements a little too much for my nephew. Guess you figured out what happened next. Yup, lots of croaking for this one. No idea why fair isle bores me now because it did not for the other Vinter Lue I made, but I need to get this finished ASAP!
Despite not being able to work on my nephew’s Vinter Lue, I did finish my second square for Comforting Jenn, the matching hat to the last post’s socks, and began another gift that must be a secret for now. I thought about making a couple of squares for another “Make a blanket for charity” KAL, but have second thoughts about the whole bit.
Unlike Warming Grace, Papa’s Quilt, and the other charities I am knitting projects for (Ryan’s Dulaan Project, Norma’s Red Scarf Project, and Sarah’s Dutchicans Project), this “charity” requires that high-end yarns be given, with the requirement being silk. Plus it looks like I must not be trustworthy, because the person who started it emailed me a message that I needed to show her what they looked like before she gave me the address on where to send them. I find it hard to stomach such demands for a blanket. Please consider that we have to live solely on my income until Rich finds work. Also, I had to sell my hard-earned stash (most of it was literally my pay for working at a now-closed yarn shop) in order to go back home and for the latest month’s bills. It is so disheartening that the yarns in my stash are either the wrong fiber content or color. The whole matter deflates me. Am I being selfish for being so frugal? Jessi and Zy could care less. All they want is for me to leave them alone for their morning snooze! =:8

Ok I’m confused……… charity knitting requiring silk???
Anyway, no not selfish at all, helping others is a wonderful thing to do, but there is no point in going to extremes and needing charity yourself.

That is odd, requiring silk. There are so many other opportunities. And I think you are already ahead, so may as well cruise for now until better times.
If specific fibers and pre-screening are needed, I’d be rethinking the sending of a square or two myself. You have what you have, no need to apologize for that. There are many places that would appreciate what you have and the time and talent it takes to makes something for them. If this silk-only, pre-screened squares blanket is special, they’ll find the people with silk in their stashes who don’t mind having to have their work submitted to a jury for inclusion.
So respectfully decline to participate. I’m sure you’ll find another worthy cause that will take you as you are!
Well, isn’t that SPECIAL?! I can understand a specific fiber request if the recipient is allergic to fibers, but ….. well, it’s just amazing to me that someone would require squares to be, as Kathleen says, juried before inclusion. How can the organizers of this thing not know how offensive that is? If they have a particular blanket in mind and they are that specific in its content, they should provide the yarn and the pre-approved patterns. I have participated in an online baby shower, for example, where there was a certain amount of (welcome) artistic control taken. So the organizers asked for a small donation to defray the cost of the yarn, then ordered and provided the yarn, and gave parameters, as in “each square should have at least two colors,” and “all squares should be garter stitch.” Fair enough, and it’s nice to have some guidance — especially for a baby shower where only one blanket is being provided and it needs to be one cohesive piece of art . But…..ugh. Just….whatever. Respectfully decline.

Well, I sure don’t agree with that “charity’s” policies at all!!! I could see asking for machine washable items, or a certain color scheme. But beyond that, they should appreciate whatever is sent!!
Silk? and Charity? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of such a policy!

I’m late to the party but would say that charity “doesn’t fit” what you can offer right now. I wouldn’t waste too much energy on it, and, if they’re that strict, you can’t be the first person to bow out after finding out their rules.
Enough other people like what you do, I’m sure if you’re feeling like you need to make a something for others, the right opportunity will pop up. It’s quite generous of you to knit for charity under the circumstances you’re describing. Remember, it is charity, not martyrdom!
Um, SILK for a knitting charity? I’ve only gotten myself full silk yarn once for ME and only because it was on a really good sale price and it was a small shawl.
I’d say bag the charity that demands silk and keep on knitting for the charities that are thankful for your time and yarn. What type of charity is it, Beverly Hills unemployed Actors?
I agree with everyone above who’s said that charity is charity, and as long as you’re sending quality stuff, they have no right to complain. If someone wants to make a silk blanket, they can darn well get the materials themself. That’s just batshit insane.
Well, this “charity” really got me thinking – how in all the world can they have such extreme requirements? I mean, silk and charity, this actually doesn’t really go along together for me – perhaps they’ll be ripping out all the stuff they receive and thus have a nice silk-yarn-stash then??? Strange, and definitely not a thing that I’d ever join – there’s so many “normal” and thus good charities out there that are happy with what they get and don’t have Hollywood-like-requirements!

I’ll tell you what though. I am starting to wish I had got an angora bun. Gretchen had been shedding like crazy and every time I pick up a ball of fluff, I sigh because I cannot somehow spin that soft fur into some yarn!!
I am surprised that you are even considering participating in such a ‘charity’. I do not think this is really a charity thing. It must be something else in disguise. I would NOT feel guilty about not participating. There are too many other deserving charities that can use your attention.

WOW that is nuts! what kind of charity is that to be so specialized. I think I would run from that one.
